Objective

Garnet-like, Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is a promising solid electrolyte (SE) material for solid-state-batteries (SSBs), whose market growth highlights the urgent need for sustainable waste management solutions. Hybrid recycling, which integrates thermal pre-treatment and recovery of critical elements, is a highly promising approach, especially for complex material streams like LLZO. However, this method remains unexplored for SSBs. EROS aims to address this gap by combining advanced thermodynamic modeling and experiments to develop an efficient hybrid recycling process for LLZO. In this regard, phase diagrams are essential in designing the thermal pre-treatment conditions directly influencing downstream recovery. The first step of the project is to execute thermodynamic modeling using the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) approach to develop a database for calculating phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties. This will be done at Seoul National University during the first 24 months of the project. During the return phase in Aalto University, key experiments will be designed to examine chemical reactions and phase formation during pre-treatment, providing critical data to enhance recycling efficiency. This innovative approach aims to reduce energy consumption, material losses and accelerate industry adaptation of hybrid recycling methods for new battery materials. The project will allow the fellow to benefit from the combined mentorship of expert supervisors in CALPHAD (outgoing phase) and thermochemistry (EU phase), skill development, and collaborate with international peers, enabling her to explore new research avenues and secure collaborative projects. She will also share her expertise in metallurgy and CALPHAD modeling to both the outgoing and EU host institutions, contributing to broader research and industrial advancements.
