Objective
Brain disorders, including neurological and mental disorders alike, are a major cause of death and disability in Europe and worldwide. The aftermaths of the Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical and environmental crises and increasing economic pressure in many countries further aggravate the situation, in particular for the most vulnerable. Hence, maintaining brain health and coping with the burden of brain disorders are paramount for societies in Europe and worldwide. To take on these grand challenges, a coordinated and holistic research and innovation initiative - the European Partnership for Brain Health (EP BrainHealth) - is implemented as a major joint effort of the European Commission, Member States, Associated Countries, international and global partners. The vision of EP BrainHealth is improved brain health for all, using scientific knowledge as a ground to promote brain health and to prevent and cure brain diseases. By capitalising on existing initiatives and linking with all relevant stakeholders, the partnership strengthens transnational collaboration to increase and align investments in brain health research and innovation. The mission is to enhance understanding of the brain in all its dimensions and to foster translation of research results into tailored and accessible solutions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care with tangible impact for societies. A Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda outlines joint strategic priorities and the main lines of action that are translated into concrete activities and tasks in the EP work plan. Nine ambitious work packages are dedicated to a broad range of activities, including funding of research and innovation, bridging with private sector and the healthcare system, building research capacities and engaging and empowering citizens and patients. All activities feed into four central hubs: increasing competitiveness, accelerating innovation, building capacities and structuring the BrainHealth ecosystem.
