Objective

The PRISM programme (PhD Research Programme for International Training in Sustainable Soft Matter) is an ambitious and innovative doctoral programme at PSL University. Its goal is to train 30 highly skilled researchers to address the challenges of the ecological transition in the field of soft matter science. PSL, ranked among the top 25 universities worldwide and home to Europe’s largest soft matter research centre, provides an exceptional scientific environment, with more than 40% of its researchers coming from abroad. PRISM leverages PSL’s expertise in soft matter, microfluidics, fluid mechanics, and industrial process sciences to tackle four major challenges: 1) developing eco-friendly chemical processes, 2) building a circular economy, 3) innovating in renewable energy concepts, and 4) enhancing carbon capture, storage, and valorisation. The programme's four main objectives are: 1) to attract 30 excellent PhD candidates through a competitive, two-phase international selection process, 2) to offer a comprehensive doctoral education including courses on sustainable soft matter science and ecological transition, as well as cross-disciplinary skills training (professional development, scientific communication, ethics, innovation, and entrepreneurship), 3) to increase the employability of graduates in this highly sought-after field by providing international placements and industrial partnerships, and 4) to strengthen PSL’s visibility and public engagement in the ecological transition through communication events and an open science policy. The PRISM programme, drawing on PSL’s prior experience in managing European projects (COFUND AI4theSciences (GA no.945304)), will thus train skilled researchers capable of addressing the crucial challenges of the ecological transition in soft matter science in EU's academia and industry.
