Training Doctoral Excellence for Resilient and Just Future

Objective

RESDOC is a unique training programme bridging life, natural and social sciences to educate experts for sustainable, resilient and just solutions. RESDOC addresses multidimensional and intertwined topics: climate change, biodiversity loss, emerging infectious diseases, increasing antibiotic resistance, and changing food and water systems. These complex challenges need holistic research-based knowledge to guide sustainable solutions, fair and equitable adaptation. The RESDOC programme takes an integrated approach, where training in research skills is interconnected with learning skills that are transferable to non-research settings. The programme connects topical research projects undertaken by doctoral candidates with a multidimensional understanding of systemic thinking and resilience, complemented with knowledge on how AI can be used effectively and ethically and how to create research-based innovations. Moreover, diversity perspectives in research are recurrent themes in training. RESDOC is anchored in the University of Helsinki’s largest research profiling area to date, Resilient and Just Systems (RESET), ensuring access to the most stimulating research environment, interdisciplinary research options, top-level supervision, high-quality facilities, and extensive networks. The programme provides a multi-level approach to researcher training, where scientific excellence meets strengthened researcher and business skills, as well impactful social responsibility. RESDOC supplies society with a new generation of creative and critical researchers capable of responsible research and innovation and will improve Europe's level of expertise and competitiveness in solving major global health and sustainability challenges. RESDOC consolidates the interdisciplinary aspect and alignment of doctoral training with the University’s strategic research profiling areas. Together with our domestic and international partners, we aim to train 30 future experts in the RESDOC Programme.
