Objective

This project addresses the primary current bottleneck in Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology which is poor light outcoupling efficiency. To overcome this issue, it introduces a novel and ambitious approach that integrates advanced external light extraction structures with an internal Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) for highly efficient photon recycling. Preliminary simulations show that this strategy can lead to OLEDs with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) exceeding 80%, a dramatic leap beyond the state-of-the-art. The research plan is structured around four innovative objectives: (1) establishing and deploying a global optimization simulation that uses sophisticated trans-scale modelling to co-design the entire OLED system for maximum EQE; (2) experimentally fabricating and validating these ultra-high-efficiency OLEDs; (3) extending the technology to high-performance pixelated displays; and (4) exploring the ‘moonshot’ goal of translating the concept to flexible substrates using an absorption-mediated enhancement in refractive index. The soundness of the methodology is rooted the applicant's deep expertise in multi-scale/trans-scale simulation tools and the host’s leadership position in systematic OLED fabrication and optimization. Robust risk mitigation strategies are in place to address technical challenges such as high computational costs and fabrication consistency. Key outcomes will include high-impact publications, a versatile open-source simulation model, and valuable intellectual property. This research is poised to establish a new paradigm in optical design for light-emitting devices, enabling next-generation flexible electronics and displays with significantly improved energy efficiency.
