Objective
Most quantum simulation platforms are limited to spin S = 1/2 systems, preventing access to the rich physics of mixed-spin quantum matter. With MiSARAS I propose to develop the first solid-state platform for mixed-spin quantum simulation using gate-defined semiconductor quantum dots populated with multiple elementary charges to create artificial atoms with spin multiplicities exceeding 1/2. This innovative approach transforms multi-charge occupation, typically maintained at single occupancy, into a powerful resource for engineering programmable S > 1/2 ground states. Building on this idea, the project will systematically develop control over individual multi-charge quantum dots and extend this to coherent manipulation of quantum dot arrays with unprecedented connectivity. Key demonstrations of the platform capabilities will include realization of S = 1 Haldane chains exhibiting topological edge states, frustrated magnetism in competing interaction models, and mixed-spin systems combining S =1 and S = 1/2 sites. The proposed platform overcomes the fundamental limitations of fixed-spin quantum simulators and will provide unprecedented access to mixed-spin quantum phases predicted but rarely observed. The research will be conducted at QuTech, TU Delft, using state-of-the-art Ge/SiGe quantum dot devices and established theoretical collaborations. Expected outcomes include new experimental protocols for mixed-spin quantum simulation, fundamental insights into artificial quantum matter, and establishment of European leadership in the emerging field of quantum simulations. The platform's electrical control and semiconductor compatibility position it for integration into future quantum technology applications.
