Objective

The ship-to-grid (S2G) service enables bidirectional energy flow between wind energy conversion systems (WECS) and electric battery storage systems in electric ships (ESs) via floating charging stations. The main objective of the project, Zero-carbon Ship-to-Grid Optimizer (CS2G), is to innovate an optimal ship-to-grid dispatch approach. Since the wake effect (WE) causes wind speed deficits in wind turbines for spatially heterogeneous floating charging stations, time-varying WE conditions should be considered in CS2G to coordinate ESs and to achieve 100% charging from WECS for zero carbon emissions. In this project, we focus on two key research objectives: (i) accurately model cell voltage and thermal constraints, and the corresponding life-cycle aging cost quantifications for battery dispatch solutions based on electrochemical-thermal-aging dynamics; (ii) formulate a CS2G dispatch model to charge ESs with wind energy between spatially heterogeneous floating charging stations under time-varying WE conditions and get solved by a decentralized optimization approach with superior computational performance. The outcomes of this project can contribute to the decarbonization of maritime transport in EU and support Sweden to develop world's leading climate-smart ports. The CS2G project will be executed by an experienced researcher. The researcher will cooperate closely with a supervisor with a deep background in Power System Infrastructure Asset Management and Plug-in Electric Vehicles Optimization. The beneficiary will also benefit from the researcher's working experience in Canada, which has a strong research group in battery dispatch optimization. This project also fits the Horizon Europe missions and can help achieve the 2050 climate-neutral goals of the EU and the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
