Objective

"Direct air capture (DAC) is a method for capturing the CO2 already emitted to the atmosphere, and has shown significant promise for future developments and subsequent sustainability contributions. However, existing DAC technologies are challenged by the high cost of dealing with CO2 fate and the huge capture-driven energy demand, hindering the widespread adoption of this sustainable solution. To overcome these challenges, realizing passively driven CO2 capture (zero extra energy consumption), and continuously-efficiently converting CO2 into high-value fuel products hold great potential. My project (SOLCAP) proposes a breakthrough DAC-photothermal conversion coupled solution for CO2 removal and upgrading from air. This is indeed a passive technique ""driven by solar (photo and thermal)"" and ""facilitated through cyclic CO2 capture and release"" for ""continuous and efficient photothermal conversion and ultimately high-value products"". The overall process is absolutely sustainable involving only ambient air’s CO2, solar energy, and natural water resources. SOLCAP aims to lay the foundation of research in next-generation DAC solutions and push the boundaries of state-of-the-art through: a) proposing and validating a first-of-its-kind passive solar-based DACU solution, b) identify and characterize low-cost, high-efficiency photothermal materials with suitable structures and properties for the system, and c) experimental validation and assessing its technno-economic performance across various configurations for real-world applications. The project will develop the fundamental theories and methods to design, optimize, and test the innovative solar driven thermochemical solution. The outcome is a highly efficient and stable passive solar system for not only eliminating the CO2 emitted to our atmosphere but also producing high-value chemicals out of that."
